ABOUT THE PARK

Spanning on a 160 sqkm area in the northern part of Rwanda, the Volcanoes National Park is part of the Greater Virunga Landscape shared between the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Rwanda and the Republic of Uganda.

The Volcanoes National Park is situated in the far northwest of Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park protects the steep slopes of this magnificent mountain range. It is home of the endangered mountain gorilla and a rich mosaic of montane ecosystems, which embrace evergreen and bamboo forest, open grassland, swamp and heath.

Volcanoes National Park is named after the chain of dormant volcanoes making up the Virunga Massif: Karisimbi – the highest at 4,507m, Bisoke with its verdant crater lake, Sabinyo, Gahinga and Muhabura.

It was initially a small area around Karisimbi, Mikeno and Bisoke volcanoes which was gazetted to protect the Mountain gorillas which were facing the threat of extinction as a result of poaching.

The Volcanoes National Park Rwanda is one of the 3 homes of the endangered mountain gorillas within the Virunga Mountains. Besides gorillas, Volcanoes National Park is a home for golden monkeys, a variety of birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects among other creatures.

ACTIVITIES

The Main Tourism activity in the Volcanoes National Park is the gorillas trekking, in addition, the golden monkey tracking, birds watching, mountains Kalisimbi, Muhabura, Gahinga, Bisoke hike, nature walk, Musanze caves, Dian Fossey Tomb tour, Ibyiwacu cultural Village, Buhanga eco-park….

To ensure the continued recovery of the tourism industry, the Rwanda Development Board has put in place promotional rates which are valid until December 31st, 2023. In Volcanoes National Park, 24 Gorillas groups are monitored but 3 groups of them are currently out of daily monitoring as it is believed that these groups have crossed into DRC. The park officials believe that GVTC can help on this matter.
