Biodiversity conservation in the Greater Virunga Landscape remains the main open door for Transboundary Collaboration between the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Rwanda and the Republic of Uganda.

Greater Virunga Transboundary Collaboration and its partners have recently concluded the exercise of developing the ten-year Transboundary Strategic Plan 2024-2033 of the Greater Virunga Landscape.

Implementing this strategic plan requires an action plan. In this respect, GVTC and WWF have facilitated a meeting of experts from UWA, RDB, IGCP, GVTC, WCS, and WWF. A two-day meeting took place in Kigali at Lemigo Hotel from 26 to 27 June 2024 to develop an action plan for the years 2024-2025.

Participants of the technical working group to develop the action plan for year one of the 10-year GVL TSP

The European Delegation to Rwanda and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Rwanda were invited and they were represented by Ms Amparo GONZÁLEZ DÍEZ, the Team Leader of Rural Development, Environment, Climate Action, and Gender, European Delegation to Rwanda.

Mrs. Amparo GONZÁLEZ DÍEZ, the Team Leader of Rural Development, Environment, Climate Action, and Gender, at the European Delegation to Rwanda, attended the working group meeting.

It was appreciated that three countries, DRC, Rwanda and Uganda, were represented in this meeting. The representative of the EU appreciated that biodiversity conservation remains the main room where collaboration is still possible despite political challenges between the GVTC partner states. She promised to bring this positive point to the attention of her headquarters. Also, she committed to working to bring together donors around the GVL conservation as this Greater Virunga Transboundary collaboration initiative remains unique in the conservation world.

Participants were happy to work together, as the action plan would allow them to plan together, budget together, share information, fundraise together, and report coherently together to improve interventions in the Greater Virunga Landscape.
