On the 2nd March 2016, Mr. Carlos Drews, the Chairperson of the IGCP Board( International Gorilla Conservation Program) accompanied by Mrs. Anna Behm, the IGCP Director, visited the GVTC headquarters in Nyarutarama(Kigali). The delegation was welcomed by Dr. Georges Muamba Tshibasu, the Executive Secretary (ES) who noticed that it was a great honor to receive IGCP delegation at GVTC while reminding the longest term collaboration that still exist between the two institutions. The GVTC ES pointed out that IGCP is a real historical partner for GVTC.
Mr. Carlos Drews said how happy he was to share that particular moment with GVTC team and mentioned that he got good news about the GVTC Treaty signing which is obviously a success for GVTC and its partners, including IGCP.
The GVTC ES mentioned that GVTC still needs IGCP’s support in and recognized the fruitful partnership between the two institutions during the last conflicts periods. Such a partnership was necessary to manage the coordination of the conservation institutions within the Greater Virunga Landscape (GVL). So to say, IGCP support is highly need in the GVL to manage species like gorillas, and local communities as well as international ones are requested to involve themselves in conservation initiatives to protect wildlife, and promote the living conditions by implementing development projects such as mushroom farming, water supplying, etc.
M. James Byamukama, GVTC Programs Manager, pointed out the fact GVTC is playing a key-role in the GVL by supporting and coordinating conservation efforts and in the coming months GVTC is expected to become a hub of information for conservation partners.
Finally, the IGCP Chairperson thanked GVTC Executive Secretariat and offered a present to this intergovernmental organization to mark partnership between IGCP and GVTC.
