From the 13th to the 14th May 2015 at Grant Legacy Hotel in Kigali (Rwanda), the Executive Secretariats of the Greater Virunga Transboundary Collaboration (GVTC) and the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) organized the final consultation meeting on the GVTC treaty for technical experts of the Partner States of DRC, Rwanda & Uganda. The main objective of the meeting was to agree on the content of the GVTC draft Treaty by harmonizing comments and getting consensus from the three Partner States on the GVTC draft treaty and endorse it.
The consultation meeting gathered 10 delegates from Rwanda,6 delegates from Uganda and 7 from DRC.
The previous consultations held from the 19th to the 21st March and those held from the 13th to the 14th at the Grant Legacy Hotel in Kigali lasted five days and achieved consensus on the final draft Treaty.
Delegates experts were from Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) in Uganda, Rwanda Development Board (RDB) in Rwanda and Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN) in DRC, with support from experts from the ministries of environment, tourism & conservation; trade & cooperation, justice, and foreign affairs of partner states.
In conclusion, delegates agreed on the importance of having the GVTC treaty signed as it will give a legal status to GVTC to enhance the transboundary collaboration for a sustainable conservation in the three partner states. It should be mentioned that previous efforts by the three partner states have actually led to positive effects on the conservation of their common natural heritage in the Greater Virunga Landscape as well as for the improvement of the livelihoods of communities living around the national parks.
The final document of the Treaty is now ready to be submitted to the Line ministers of the partner states for signing in a near future before its implementation by GVTC and its partners in the Greater Virunga Landscape.
